April Showers

I would like to show you all my latest offering....

Coming into the colder months I thought a scarf for the Autumn weather was in order, I am a bit of a scarf lover myself.

Made from gorgeous linen and cotton fabrics and complimented by a gorgeous olive green velvet rose corsage.

As a little companion to this ensemble, I have designed a little clutch purse with a persimmon velvet clover.

I have also used two of my favourite vintage buttons to complete the picture.

Coloured Linen

I am one very happy girl!!!!

I have in my hot little hand, wait for it..... coloured linen!!!!

I have wanted and dreamed of using coloured linen for so long now, I have never been able to find it in Australia.

Here it is, like looking at all your favourite gelati flavours all at once and not being able to choose.

Well I did choose some for this visit anyway, My three favourite colours at the moment, Persimmon, Chartreuse and Aqua and a few other varieties of these and of course PINK!!

Where I hear you ask, if you live in Melbourne you are in luck, The shop is called The Fabric Store it is in Brunswick Street Fitzroy, there is also a store in Surry Hills in Sydney.

I will be using these in many of my up and coming designs so look out for them.

Linen is the most gorgeous fabric to use and for those of you who have worked with it before know what I mean.

Forget-Me-Nots and Lilies

Quite a while ago now my Mum gave me this beautiful tapestry.

After my Grandfather passed away my Mother had the awful task of packing up his home, and while going through some old boxes she found the tapestry tucked away and forgotten..... almost, Mum very generously gave it to me.

It is the work of my Great Grandmothers hands, and i am so honored to have it. She has created a beautiful spray of Forget-Me- Nots and Lilies.

The most beautiful part about it is she had left the needle still with its thread in her work, like she had just put it down and would pick it up again later, sadly no.

I would like to make something from it, so it doesn't get left packed away in my linen cupboard, it is quite large, I could have it framed or make a pillow/cushion, not sure.

Will post again when it is done.

Needle Turn Applique

It was my great privilege to spend a day stitching with Vikki from Sew Useful Designs and Gail from Gail Pan Designs this week.

Gail was sharing her great needle turn applique skills with Vikki and I.

It was really fun, I have always wanted to learn the skill and hope to include it in my designs in the future.

This was my effort for the day, a little birdy! not much I know, but there was much chat and a homemade cookie or two, so....

I will keep practicing, I just love the neat result, thankyou Gail and Vikki for a lovely day.

Very Useful Things

I decided that my first designs for 2011 would be useful to the little people in our lives.

If your little darlings are anything like mine, they are usually off somewhere with you, going here and there, picking up other little people or Daddy, having trips out and about.

My girls always like to bring their treasures in the car with them, something to read, draw with or cuddle. This desire to tote all their favourite things inspired me to design

'A Load To Tote' a carry all open out bag in the shape of a case, with places for pencils, note books, ruler etc

My second design 'Precious Pennies' is a cute little purse with an extra long strap to keep hands free, room for a few pennies, tiny little friends etc

Both are available now, so ask at your favourite patchwork shop

Welcome Back!

Hello again and Happy New Year.

It has been way too long since I made a post and am happy to be back.

I hope you all had a truly scrumptious Christmas and made many loved ones feel special with hand made gifts!

We usually have a very quiet Christmas Day which is always welcome, the lead up is always crazy busy.

It was our first Christmas without my darling Grandmother who passed away in Feb 2010 she was 94, so a time of remembering and reflecting for us this year.

I usually bake quite a bit at Christmas time and made some gorgeous Lemon Curd again his year, and thought I would share the recipe with you all.

there is simply nothing better on hot toast!

Lemon Curd

Juice of 2 lemons

2 eggs, lightly whisked

3/4 cup caster sugar

125g (4oz) unsalted butter, chopped

1 teaspoon cornflour

Place all ingredients in small saucepan. Stir with a whisk over low heat until the mixture thickens, without allowing it to boil.

Remove from heat, pour into sterilised jars and seal.

Keep in the fridge

It will keep in the fridge for 1 month after opening.

Australian Quilt Market

I can't tell you how absolutely exhausted I was after two whole days at the Melbourne AQM!

last Friday afternoon there I was setting up my part of the Creative Abundance stand, I can't tell you what amazingly talented company I was in! truly inspirational

I was so happy to meet so many lovely people who love my designs, always a relief!

and a real treat to meet a few people who's work I have admired for many years.

I was even given a few treats to have a play with, Anni Downs from Hatched and Patched gave me three bundles of her gorgeous felted wool to try, I am in love with the colours and the wool is so soft. I can't wait to start sketching and playing with ideas.

It was also a pleasure to meet Pam from Cottage Garden Threads who gave me two gorgeous skeins of her variegated threads to try.

All together a great show, already starting to plan for next year!

I still have one more design to write up before the end of the year so better get back to it.

Now is always the best time!

I have an exciting event coming up on my calendar, the Melbourne AQM.

I have been frantically trying to get my catalogue updated with all my yummy new things.

It will be my first Melbourne AQM, so I am looking forward to meeting so many of the lovely people who stock my designs. So if you are planning to be there come over to the Creative Abundance booth and say hi!

I have two new designs coming up, the first Piccalily Dogwood Dahlia I am very pleased to be releasing this design, I wore the Dahlia brooch to the gathering at The Quilted Crow recently and had so many ladies asking me when it was to be released, so I got my skates on when I got home....and here it is, I have also designed a gorgeous Arum Lily brooch to accompany it.

So if you were with us in Tassie last weekend here it is!

The second is called Digging For Apples a very cute little one dressed up in her favourite apple costume, peeking through, and a gorgeous apple motif door hanger.

The Quilted Crow

I had the privilege last weekend to be in my home town of Hobart, my hosts were the lovely Deirdre and Leonie from The Quilted Crow.

I had a wonderful time showing off some of my designs and meeting the lovely ladies who frequent The Quilted Crow, we all had such a great day of stitching. It was also lovely to meet Sue Daley of Patchwork with Busy Fingers, a truly inspiring quilt designer.

For those of you who don't already know, Deirdre and Leonie have recently moved their shop into an absolutely gorgeous old church.

It happens to be the very same old church I used to catch the bus right out the front of when I went home from school each day! small world, so it was very familiar being at their shop.

I recently made the trip to Castlemaine approx 1 1/2 hours drive North West of Melbourne. I have been there many times but never to Habadash.

A superb little store dedicated to all kinds of vintage haberdashery.

I found so many things I would have loved to bring home, here are the things that made it .

I love the green flower buttons and the buckle will probably have a new life as a brooch.

If you find yourself in Castlemaine be sure to drop in, it is a treat.

The Latest Thing!

What a thrill it is tho show you my two new designs,

is my next design to make decorating for Christmas a joy.

Two gorgeous hanging linen pendants adorned with felt florets and clover, again I have used one of my favourite Christmas colour combos Peacock Blue and Red with a tiny white pin spot.

Old Lost Treasures

I must show you what I found today.

Just down the road from my house is a funky, quirky little shop, it is dedicated to all things vintage and is the home of many old lost treasures!

I have purchased a few odds and ends there over the past few years and these little gems are my latest finds.

I just love the shape of these retro Bessemer cups (mugs) one in my new favourite colour Chartreuse Green and the other in a gorgeous Aqua,
don't they just sing, standing there together!

Of course this is only the beginning, I now hope for my little set to grow, just imagine the colour possibilities, Persimmon, Cherry, Buttermilk, Baby Doll Pink. who knows, that's part of the fun!

What would be the treasure you have found that gives you the biggest thrill, you were in the right place at the right time and snapped it up and took it home?

Hedgerow Pears

I am very excited to be releasing my first Christmas project for this year.

I am having a bit of a love affair with pears at the moment, apart from being yummy, their fragrance and many varying colours are really gorgeous. You know you have a good one when you have to sit in the bath just to eat it!!

Hedgerow Pears are linen and fabric pears, they mark each guests place at the table with an adorable little name tag that swings from the pear's stalk.

or you can just line them up on the table as your centre piece or hang them around purely to decorate.

They are quite versatile really!!

It is our Lily's 11th birthday on Friday, she will be having some friends come over Saturday night for a very grown up party!

I have seen other people make these adorable little treats and have been waiting for an excuse to make a batch myself.

Animal Crackers

My latest project is inspired by my little one.

My Louisa went with her prep class to a little stall at school, there were all sorts of goodies for them to buy with points they had earned.

She came home with the only thing that caught her eye, a wee little lion toy. He is so little and cute.

It has not left her side since that day and I even found him in my bed the other night.

Animal Crackers are three little mascot pals ready to hang, made from 100% wool hand dyed felt.

I delivered them to Creative Abundance this morning so they should be in the shops very soon.

Recipe: Plump Cherries and Bakelite Beauty!!!

A little sharing time,

I have a very small collection of vintage belt buckles some are made from my favourite of favourites Bakelite.

This gorgeous green gem sat at the very tip top of the very small pile, and I have often grieved for its lonely unused state.

When these glorious plump cherry beads arrived in the mail I just knew they would sing along side my buckle.

...so here it is, I thread the beads onto some divine super wide black and cream pin stripe gross grain ribbon. I must say I am in love with the result,

I can't wait to wear it

Ooh Yummy!

We are off to a wee party and I need to bring something to entice the guests!

I decided to make Chocolate Mousse, I absolutely love it's velvety smooth texture and scrummy chocolatety goodness.

There will be quite a few guests with room to a minimum, so finger food is the go.

I found these adorable bite sized fluted moulds at The Reject Shop (cheap, cheap, cheap) aren't they just so cute!

The best thing is they are silicone so I can use them again.

The candy flowers come from a wonderful little shop called West's Cakes. They make by hand many different candy flowers in lots of yummy colours.

I am sure they will be a hit, lets hope they last until the party!! Save one for me!!

I have been busy of late, so I thought a little peek wouldn't hurt.

My new project is called 'To Market To Market' a little bag with outer pockets, (well that is the plan, it might change along the way.)

Inside you will find all the things you might buy while at the market, I have completed the first two items - Strawberry Heart Cookies and Lollypops.

This project is something I know my five year old Louisa would love to play with while making tea or setting up house for all her babies.

Puppies! Puppies! Puppies!

Bundles of endless bouncy energy and tumbles full of lovely licky love!

I have a passion for children's literature and some of my favourites star these lovable loyal friends.

Harry the dirty dog by Gene Zion who never wants his bath and goes to such extreme measures to avoid one.

And who could ever forget Dogger by Shirley Hughes the beloved toy friend who Dave loses only to be reunited again thanks to his wonderful sister Bella.

And beautiful Clifford by Norman Bridwell the biggest of them all with his luscious red coat and gentle giant nature.

All an absolute treat and a must read (even if you don't have a little one to share them with)

My latest project has been inspired by these very huggable friends.

'Snug Puppy'

A lovely armful made from 100% wool felt (of course) with a cosy fabric pouch.

I have used the new Freebird fabric by MoMo for Moda for the pouch, the chocolatey blooms are just yummy.

I will be sending it off to Creative Abundance within the next week so it should hit the stores very soon.

Pickle Mouse

I have been in love with Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge mice for as long as I can remember.

Those enchanting stories take me to an ideal little community, simple living, loving family and friends.

They have been the inspiration for my latest project, a set of three twitchy nosed little mice.

They would be so cute in a babies room or I must admit I have them on my mantel piece and everyone who has come in has gone a bit gaga over them.

I am completely in love with 100% Linen.

I have so many designs in mind for this gorgeous fabric, the wonderful bold colours of the felt shine against the contrast of linen's natural fibres.

I am very excited to let you all know that Creative Abundance will from the 1st of April 2010 be the sole wholesale distributor of my designs.

No more piles of patterns on my kitchen table!!! very good news

This will bring about some changes to the way I personally retail my designs. My website will become a gallery for you all to view my range and I will no longer be selling my patterns through this site. My year with Stitching Cow has also come to an end. Something To Share

I think it is definitely time for something new!

There is nothing nicer than a quiet cuppa out on the deck listening to the birds. Partridge and Tea is a lovely appliqué tablecloth, with small felt bird tablecloth weights.

We all have little bits and pieces we need everyday. The Promise of Spring is a delightful fabric basket and small felt roses that will be a beautiful and useful addition to any home. It would be wonderful in the sewing room holding cotton reels, or your latest project, or in the kitchen full of napkins, or even next to your bed for your reading glasses and a few tissues for that teary novel.

Definitely time to get back into it!!

A Comfy Place!

A beautiful new addition to my beloved collection of vintage chairs, was beautifully placed under our tree on Christmas morning. An old Captain's Chair.

It is sitting in my kitchen, I decided to make a little cushion to make it all the more inviting.

Exhausted, but in a good way!

Daniel and I have just polished off the last of another very delicious Christmas Pudding,

Lily and Scarlett are constructing Scarlett's present a very gorgeous and grand Lego house.

Lou Lou is outside painting with her lovely new paints, singing 'Joy To The World' (she is a joy to my world)

All in all we have had a lovely not too hectic Christmas!!

Daniel has captured some of the gorgeous memories from our day, that absolutely divine vase of Hydrangea is one of my pressies, it is actually an enamel water jug, it was the cherry on the cake, and made our table just perfect.

The Bon Bon's were a very welcome treat as well!

Now it's time for a much needed break!

The Joy of Giving

I have been busy of late, everything Christmassy from now on!!

I usually make my own cards for Christmas, I like the very personal touch they give to all my gifts.

This year to coordinate with my red aqua and white theme I have made some very sweet gift tags and a few cards to shoot off in the mail.

I have attached a few to presents already and they do look gorgeous under my tree.

What a great way to display pieces of your favourite fabrics!

I have seen many other people do this before, the result can be stunning.

I have just started with hoops I had in the cupboard, left over from my cross stitching days, and chose a few of my many favourite fabrics.

I hope to add to the collection over time, hopefully one day my studio wall will be ablaze with colour and texture!

Great idea!! whoever thought of this first, I am very impressed.

He Loves Me...

What dear little cameo princesses, each with her favourite fruit!!

My new project is called 'Toffee Apple & Marmalade" a very gorgeous tote bag to carry any little girls load.

The bag is made from a beautiful linen and cotton fabric, with a gorgeous marmalade or rosy apple red contrasting gusset.

The centre of each bag has a very sweet cameo, with the most adorable little girl peeking through.

As usual I have used lovely felt and complimented it with yummy fabrics.

A Combination Carnival

I have been collecting buttons again lately, it really is like being in a lolly shop for me.

I have recently been to a wonderful button fair, it is run once a year by The Victorian Button Collectors Club in a quaint church hall.

I chose some absolute beauties!! I also bought a few buckles that I am sure I can find a good home for.

The reason for my collecting is I plan to put a few together in groups to make the most gorgeous rings! They are so beautiful in their own right that they should be worn with as much pride as the most precious jewel.

The best part about it is I am not going to keep them all for myself, I will be listing the finished rings for sale through my website in the next few months.

Each ring will have an adjustable 'ring' so they can fit most fingers. The rings in the picture are not for sale, I thought I would show you the first few I have made.

So keep a look out for them, I am sure there will be one to suit everyone.

Before you know it!

My favourite colours for decorating at Christmas time are red white and blue. I am not a keen green and red fan.

As it is summer here at christmas time, I like the way the three colours give a crisp feel to the celebrations.

I have a very beautiful crisp white linen tablecloth I always use on our table, and last year as our centre piece I had a bowl of rosie summer cherries. The effect was stunning.

I usually make paper bon bon's of some kind, filled with treats for my guests, last year they were little paper hand bags! so cute.

This year I am planning paper cone bon bon's, I am going to put together a tutorial of the making process, later in the year, so you can join me in giving your guests something gorgeous to take home.

I would love to one day be on the other side of the world for Christmas, the magic of snow on Christmas Eve!

Seeing as it is winter here at the moment I thought I would start designing for Christmas. I have five simply adorable felt tree decorations.

Plenty of time to make them and hide them away until the big day!

Now I am Six!

We have a special tradition for the six year olds in our family, Mummy and Nanna take them out for a very grown up afternoon tea. Our Lily had her turn three years ago and recently it was Scarlett's turn.

We sat in a beautiful tea room by an open fire and warmed ourselves while indulging in a treat or two. It was a very pleasant way to spend precious time together.

My new project has been inspired by all those sumptuous, splendid goodies we all like to indulge in from time to time, entitled 'Sweets For My Sweet' I hope it will encourage you all to get baking and make something sweet for those you love

Milliner's Pins

For quite some time now I have wanted to collect hat pins, I find them quite beautiful, whether they be elborate or plain they were a dazzling ornament for the hats of an era long past.

I love the idea that once such a practical item can now be enjoyed sheerly for its beauty alone.

My mother recently moved house, and while packing and sorting through everything she came across an old hat pin that my grandmother used, it is very plain, silver in colour with a beautiful 'acorn' shape on the end, I absolutely love it. As it is the first in my collection I have it sitting in my pin cushion and it reminds me of both my Mum and Nan when I am sewing.

My new design has been inspired by this lovely pin. A collection of three different hat style pin cushions, made from fabric and felt, adorned with Rose's, Daisy's and Viola's.

Scrumptious Little Gems!!

My family absolutely love Hot Cross Buns and every year I make my own, this process of course takes quite a few hours to complete, from the first mixing of ingredients to the final knead and shaping of the buns.

I must admit I love every minute of it, the kitchen fills with the gorgeous aroma of the yeast and I know the end result will be gobbled up with glee!

It also gives me a great opportunity to discuss with my girls the reason why the buns have a cross and is a chance to remember what Jesus did for all of us.

I hope you all had a truely blessed Easter and enjoyed time with family and friends.

A Dapple of Apples!!

Well I don't know about you but I am very happy to wave goodbye to the Summer and give a very warm welcome to beautiful Autumn!!

Autumn is my very favourite season of the year, the cooler mornings the warmer food, the absolutely beautiful trees that surround our house change to every colour from gold to bronze to rich red, then gracefully drop their leaves all over our lawn, sheer bliss! and to top it all off my birthday falls in Autumn!

To celebrate the harvest season I have created a little bushel of the most delicious fabric apples, seven in all.

They are currently sitting in my lounge room on my coffee table and they look so cheery.

Something New!

I thought I would give you a little peek at my new project.

It will be featured in the September issue of Homespun magazine, this will be their 'Pink' issue so I was very inspired and keen to be involved, seeing as pink has always been and always will be my favourite colour!!

I have used some of my favourite pink fabrics and a few pale blue ones to compliment.

For now this is all I can show you, but all will be revealed in good time.

An Inspiration

You would be very disapponted in me if you saw how I kept my fabric stash, I have always been very starved of space in my work room so the fabric would be kept in a large plastic storage box. Over the years as I have accumulated more and more fabric all the new pieces would be placed on top of the others, consequently I have ended up with a very untidy mess, I would never know what I had from one day to the next.

Well no more!!

I have painstakingly sifted through my stash and folded all the larger pieces and colour coded the whole lot to reveal this!!

a very neat and tidy, easy to find system, all I need to do is fluff my duster over it once in a while.

It is very inspiring having all my fabrics in view.

I do think though, I don't have as much as I thought I did, maybe there is room for some more!

Total Heartbreak

It is so devastating to see the waste of life, homes and community, our beautiful state will not be the same again. Those of us who live close to the city can only watch the devastation on the television and try to imagine what it must be like for those involved.

My heart and prayers go out to all the wonderful CFA (of whom my brother in law is one) who have fought the fires, the incredible doctors and carers of those affected and to all of us on the outside to do all we can to assist.

'Cheerful Harvest'

I must admit that I am quite fond of celebrations, whether it be Christmas, Birthday's (especially my daughter's birthday's), Mother's Day, they all bring joy, and Easter is no exception.

I am particularly fond of all the gorgeous sparkly egg wrappers that dazzle their way into our shopping trolleys, and each year I make my own Hot Cross Buns, a beautiful recipe that leaves out all those disgusting little bugs everyone else calls mixed peel.
I am reminded each year, though, to reflect on the real reason we celebrate Easter and not to get caught up in the commercialism of the season, the price that was paid for all of us.

In celebration of new life I thought for my very first project for 2009 I would design some felt eggs, and here they are. Each egg has a different design embroidered around it, and all three are housed in an adorable little basket. I hope you like them.

Rainbow of fruit flavours!

I am so excited and inspired!

I have been up to Winterwood to collect some gorgeous felt for future creations, pistachio and apple green, raspberry, lemon, rose pink, just to name a few. 100% wool hand dyed felt is so gorgeous and thick and sews beautifully. The end product is lushious.

Those I love

I am very blessed to have a very loving and supportive husband and three beautiful girls. I thank God for them and cherish all our memories.

2008 was a very big year for us all, Daniel and I finally bought our first home!! a dream come true for us, this meant a school change and a big move, we had been at our old address for 8 years and it was home.

My girls all handled the big change like the true troopers they are and we have all settled into our new school and our beautiful new home.

The very first thing we promised we would do when we moved would be that we would get a kitten, a precious little one to complete our family. Well here he is our gorgeous ginger darling, Ned. isn't he a fine gentleman, he is such a blessing.

As I have said before I am in love with vintage buttons, especially anything in Bakelite, like so many things they don't make them like they used to, so consequently I find myself being drawn away from the every day variety and only choose the lovely sweets like the ones I have recently found to add to my stash. I have put this blog together to share with you some of the behind the scene happenings here at May Blossom and give you a sneaky peak at my upcoming projects.

I have been designing stitchery projects, dolls, quilts and felt creations for just over three years and just love it. I work mainly in the huge variety of pastel fabrics available, and also love to work with 100% hand dyed wool felt, the rainbow of colours is truely inspirational. My real passion is vintage buttons, they are the cherry on the top of any project!

Cherry Bon Bon

Cherry Bon Bon

Every year at Christmas I make something enticing to place on my table for my guests, this year I decided to make paper cone shaped Bon Bons filled with extra special treats. They look gorgeous all together on the table and are received with much gratitude.

I thought it would be nice to share with you what I have come up with, they are very simple and easy to make and it is a great excuse to work with some of the wonderful scrapbooking gems that are available out there.

All my supplies came from my local store and are quite commonly available.

Supply List

I have chosen card stock in Christmas Red, White and Aqua Blue colour palette for this project. When making rosettes choose randomly from these.

1 sheet of thick paper with a glittered finish

Pearly sticky dots in red and aqua (I used Kaiser Pearls)

50cm (10inches) metallic yarn in red and aqua (I used Celebrate)

30cm (12 inches) Disposable piping bags one per Bon Bon (Wilton Piping Bags www.wilton.com)

1cm square double sided mounting squares

1/2cm wide double sided tape (I used X-press IT)

glue stick, craft glue, scissors, pencil, awl (or small hole, hole punch)

Chosen sweets

Ribbon (I used Celebrate)

Step One - Making the Rosettes

Cut one large flat circle from card stock,

Cut one small flat circle from scrapbooking paper with a glittered finish,

Cut one fluted shape from card stock

Using the mounting doublesided tape, stack all three shapes on top of each other making sure they are centred. The large circle at the bottom the fluted in the centre and the glittered small circle on the top.

Stick a pearly sticky dot in the centre of the glittered circle, lay aside for now.

Step Two - Making the Cone

Trace one cone shape to the reverse side of the card stock and cut out.

Trace the fluted edge on the reverse side of a contrast card stock and carefully cut out.

Using a glue stick, stick the fluted shape to the top curved edge of the cone shape, allow to dry well.

Lay the pattern piece on top of the cone shape and mark with a pencil the hole placement, punch out the hole with an awl or small hole punch.

Stick a length of double sided tape down one straight side of the cone shape.

Using the glue stick tube, ease the cone shape around it to start to form the curve of the cone, remove the backing paper from the double sided tape and stitck both straight edges together, easing as you go, you may need a small dab of glue at the bottom to hold. This step may take some time but is worth patience. This will be the back of your Bon Bon.

Step Three - Putting it all Together

Cut the 50cm piece of the metallic yarn in half and thread one piece through one of the holes and tie a knot in the end on the outside of the cone, repeat with the other hole. Tie the two raw ends of the yarn in a bow.

Stick a pearly sticky dot in place in each of the ‘valleys’ of the fluted top, all the way around the cone.

Place a dab of glue to the back of your rosette and stick to the top left hand side of your cone.

Trim down a disposable piping bag so it is approx 25cm (10 inches) from top to tip.
Fill with sweets of choice, twist the top and tie with a length of matching ribbon.

Place your sweets in your Bon Bon ready for your guests!

These also make great "Thank You" gifts for a little one's parties!
